HOW TO BECOME AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN

Australian Citizenship is a privilege that many people aspire to achieve – however, not everyone is granted this privilege. There are various Australian Citizenship streams and pathways to become a citizen, with each designed to suit a variety of individuals. Who Needs To Take The Test for Australian Citizenship?

Depending on your stream application, you may be required to take part in an interview and take the test for Australian Citizenship. In general, applicants who are qualified and required to take the test are the following:

  • Individuals aged between 18 and 59 years
  • An Australian permanent resident that has lived in Australia for over four years
  • Have good character and adequate knowledge of what the Australian Citizenship entails

In some cases, applicants aged 16-17 years old and people over 60 years may not need to take the Australian Citizenship test but are required to take part in an interview. The Department of Home Affairs will personally let you know if this applies to you.

What’s Included In The Test?

According to the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs, the Questions in the Citizenship test are based on the following:

  • Basic Australian history and its people
  • Australia’s democratic beliefs, rights and liberties
  • The Government and the law in Australia
  • ​An understanding and commitment to Australian values based on freedom, respect and equality

To pass the test you must:

  • Answer 20 multiple choice questions
  • Answer all 5 of the Australian values questions correctly, and
  • Get a mark of at least 75% overall

How Can I Prepare For The Test?

Pathways For Australian Citizenship

  • Australian Permanent Residents or New Zealand Citizens
  • Individuals Aged 60 Years and Above (Citizenship by Conferral)
  • Individuals Whose Parents are Australian Citizens / By Descent

After Acquiring an Australian Citizenship 

An Australian Citizenship allows you the following privileges: 

  • Stay in Australia indefinitely
  • Work and study in Australia 
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want 
  • Sponsor dependent children or eligible family members to come to Australia
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s public health care scheme 
  • Access Australian Government benefits

As an Australian Citizen, your responsibilities include: 

  • Obey all Australian laws
  • Exercise your rights to vote in federal and state or territory elections, and in a referendum
  • Defend Australia should the need arise
  • Serve on jury duty if called to do so
