Why are more migrants choosing to study in Perth? With the Federal Government’s recent classification of Perth as a ‘regional’ area for visa and migration purposes in November 2019, the city is certainly becoming an even more attractive destination for international students.
Perth International Students | New Visa Benefits
Perth international students are now able to access regional incentives. These benefits may be available to international students who choose to undertake their study in Perth:
- An extra year to work in Australia on a Post-study Visa;
- Scholarships worth $15,000 to study as an international student and;
- A Permanent Residence (PR) pathway after living and working in Perth for three years on a Subclass 494 Skilled Regional Visa;
Finance Minister, Mathias Cormann believes the incentives will attract more Perth international students, with flow-on benefits for the WA economy.
Mr Cormann said, “That additional year of post-study work by international students who choose Perth will not only benefit students with work experience, income and post-study financial stability, but also help drive stronger economic growth.”
The regional visa benefits are great news for international students from around the world who plan would like to study, live and start their career in Australia. The extra year available on a Post Study Visa will particularly make it easier for international students to gain work after their studies.
The changes are likely to result in more international students choosing to study in Perth rather than Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Unlike Perth, these larger cities remain classified as major metropolitan areas and therefore do not provide access to regional incentives.
Perth currently has five world-class universities:
- University of Western Australia
- Curtin University of Technology
- Edith Cowan University
- Murdoch University
- University of Notre Dame
Perth’s regional classification also benefits applicants for Australia’s independent points-tested visas. This is because living and working in a regional area provides applicants access to extra points.
