Australia Has One Of The Most Powerful Passports | The Australian passport has again ranked in the world’s top 10 most powerful passports for 2020 according to the Henley Passport Index, which measures the most travel-friendly passports across the globe. Australia ranked number 9 alongside New Zealand, Malta, Czech Republic and Canada.
The Henley Passport Index ranks the ‘travel-friendliness’ of a country’s passport according to the number of countries you can travel to without needing a visa. Currently, if you have an Australian passport you can generally travel to a total of 183 countries without needing a visa.
This brings Australia into the 9th spot, which isn’t far behind Japan which ranks first with visa-free access to 191 countries. South Korea and Germany ranked third on the list, allowing passport holders to travel to 189 countries without a visa.

Australia Has One Of The Most Powerful Passports
Australian passport holders have one of the most powerful passports in the world and can generally travel without a visa to countries such as Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Fiji, New Zealand and all of Europe among others.
They can also access an Electronic Travel Authority (eTA) for countries such as the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Sri Lanka and have access to visas on arrival in countries like Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Nepal, Maldives and Bangladesh.
This year, the Australian passport climbed one place in the rankings. The Index is updated annually to align with each country’s visa policy changes and is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). It covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations.
