Delays in Government processing of subclass 457 visas has worsened in 2016, according to the Migration Institute of Australia. The Australian newspaper recently reported some small businesses have complained of delays of more than four months, however, the Government has confirmed the average 457 visa is processed in 40 working days or eight weeks.
Migration Institute Chief Angela Julian-Armitage told The Australian, “The controversy centres on disputes over whether the positions being advertised are genuine.”
Subclass 457 visas are designed to allow businesses to hire offshore talent in cases where the market is limited locally. The delay has affected individuals and businesses in the hospitality, medical and resources industries which have a common need for the 457 visa program.
