The Federal Government has capped the number of accountants that will be able to receive a skilled visa to 4777, which may affect businesses looking to sponsor an accountant from overseas from 1 July, 2016.
Accountants applying for a work visa individually without employer sponsorship will also be affected as the cap applies to both employer sponsored and non employer sponsored work visas for the accountancy field of occupation.
The change for 2016/17 marks a deviation from the way in which the Government’s usually caps visa numbers for occupational categories. Previously, the Government only capped figures for independently acquired skilled work visas and did not include non employer sponsored visas in the capping restrictions.
According to the Migration Industry of Australia, the Department expects the cap for both employer sponsored and independently acquired visas for accountancy will provide a more accurate figure for accountant planning levels across the broader skilled migration program.
Visas for all other occupations on the Government’s SkillSelect list continue to remain uncapped for non employer sponsored visas in 2016/17.
