Australian cities made three of the top 10 most liveable cities spots in the annual index undertaken by The Economist Intelligence Unit. Melbourne took the number one spot, Adelaide came in at a tie with Calgary at 5th and Perth followed closely behind in 7th place, up one from place from the previous year.
The survey ranks 140 cities from around the world based on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Melbourne received perfect scores for healthcare, education and infrastructure and has been ranked the number one city for the sixth year in a row.
The Economist Intelligence Unit says the survey can be useful for global businesses to determine how much extra to pay employees that are moving between cities. For example, the Index suggests increasing allowances by 20 per cent if employees have to move from Melbourne to PNG’s Port Moresby.
Premier and Tourism Minister Colin Barnett said: “Perth is a vibrant city with clear skies, fresh air and beautiful beaches, where people can still enjoy the benefits of a modern, sophisticated city and a relaxed lifestyle.
“When you look around the world, where else would you get the kind of health care and education standards that are delivered in WA.”
Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said winning the top spot was “a fantastic accolade for Melbourne and something we should all be proud of”.
“We do not take this title for granted and are constantly planning and implementing policies that will continue to improve our quality of life,” Mayor Doyle said.
“It is an exciting time in Melbourne: we’ve got many major infrastructure projects underway including the Metro Tunnel, and the proposed renewal of the Queen Victoria Market precinct.
“It’s also the little things also make a big difference: planting more trees, recycling stormwater, making more parks and green spaces, providing better paths and connections for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as embracing technology and data to improve our operations.”
Adelaide dwellers were also happy with the win, with this year marking the fifth year in a row that Adelaide has come 5th in the rankings.
